Our guide to eight jobs behind the game showed that sport needs far more than athletes. The next question we heard was simple: how do you actually get in? Building a career in sports business in India is very possible, but the people who make it rarely follow a single, neat path. Here’s what works.
Step 1: Pick your lane before you pick a course
“I want to work in sports” isn’t a plan. “I want to work in sports sponsorship” is. The industry is a set of very different jobs, and each one needs a different set of skills:
Commercial: sponsorship, partnerships, sales, ticketing
Content and media: writing, video, social media, broadcast production
Data and tech: performance analysis, fan data, product and engineering
Operations: events, venues, logistics, league and team operations
Talent and legal: athlete management, contracts, sports law
Choose one or two lanes that match what you’re already good at. It will shape everything else: what you learn, what you build and who you contact.
Step 2: Do you need a sports management degree?
The honest answer: it helps, but it isn’t required.
A specialised course can give you industry vocabulary, a network and sometimes an internship pipeline. But many people in sports business come from marketing, finance, journalism, law, engineering or design, and brought those skills into sport.
