The 2029 Weightlifting World Championships will take place in Ahmedabad, marking the first time India hosts the senior edition of the global competition. Announced by the International Weightlifting Federation on October 25, the decision adds another major sporting event to Ahmedabad's calendar ahead of the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
For India, the opportunity extends beyond the competition itself. Hosting a world championship brings requirements around venues, event operations, athlete services, broadcasting and commercial partnerships. Whether those requirements translate into lasting benefits for the country's sports industry will depend on how the event is organised and what remains after it ends.
Ahmedabad is building an international sports calendar
The 2029 championship is another step in Ahmedabad's ambitions to become a destination for major sporting events.
The city is scheduled to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and has also been identified as a potential host city if India secures the right to stage the 2036 Olympic Games.
The weightlifting championship gives organisers another opportunity to deliver an international event before the Commonwealth Games. It also places India on the calendar of a global federation for one of the sport's major senior competitions.
The IWF awarded several championships together as part of an effort to consolidate its international calendar. Ahmedabad will host the 2029 senior World Championships, while Moscow will host the 2030 edition. Prishtina, Kosovo, will stage the 2028 World Youth Championships, and Caracas, Venezuela, will host the 2028 World Junior Championships.
For Ahmedabad, the immediate task is to turn the hosting decision into a well-delivered event. The longer-term opportunity is to develop the operational experience and local capabilities needed to support more international competitions.
The business behind hosting a world championship
A major sporting event creates work across more than the venue itself.
